The name Calabria derives from “KALON-BRION” (meaning “I DO GOOD” or “I DO WELL” or “I MAKE GOOD ARISE” in Greek).
But what makes the ancient ‘KALON-BRION’ unique are its contrasts: hard-to-reach perched villages, rugged mountains and golden beaches alternate within a few kilometers.
Also known as a home of high valued agri-food products, like licorice etc. The best licorice in the world is that of Calabrian and it is known as the black gold of Calabria.
About 80% of all Italian liquorice production is located right in Calabria.
The Licorice of Calabria is an Italian agri-food product made in some areas of Calabria with fresh or dried licorice and its extract. In 2011 the product obtained the recognition of protected designation of origin from the European Union. The licorice liqueur is also made from this fantastic plant.
